| Gabbeh is a brilliantly
colorful, profoundly romantic ode to beauty, nature, love and art. It refers
to a traditional style of weaving from Southwestern Iran. The nomadic people
of the Lori, Bakhtiari, and the Qashqai tribes have woven Gabbeh Oriental
rugs for a hundred years, and continue to keep this tribal art form alive.
The irregular motifs of gabbeh - made of sheep wool dyed in natural colourants, all herbal pigments are usually improvised with inspiration from the surrounding landscape and natural elements as well as folklore and fables recounted since time immemorial, and the weavers own imagination , whims, and moods. In the past few years Gabbeh designs have become more advanced with more variety, and it has become the new trend in Oriental rugs. The beauty of Gabbeh Oriental carpets is their departure from the classic Persian style, to one of more freedom and natural expression. Through the deliberate distortions of line and color, and the simplified use of pattern, the weaver increases the emotional impact of their art.
